ALMA’s Montecarlo solver generates its first result

The particle-based Montecarlo solver of the Boltzmann transport equation in ALMA has reached its first important milestone after becoming able to compute the effective thermal conductivity of a slab of crystalline silicon from first principles.

The figure shows how important deviations from Fourier’s law are in microscale and nanoscale devices. ALMA will afford better predictive estimates of temperature fields and heat fluxes in such settings than current model. The Montecarlo algorithm is a critical piece for doing so in an efficient and scalable manner.
